Stop No. 6
Immerse yourself in Gaslamp Quarter for a few hours, and youll
see why its like no other place on San Diego.
The Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego has been known by many names.
It has been called Rabbitville. Flea Town. New Town San Diego.
Davis' Folly. Stingaree. Chinatown. S.O.B. (South of Broadway)
And finally, The Gaslamp Quarter. Originally intended to be the
main business district, the area has suffered through decades
of decay, punctuated by short bursts of success, but one thing
has remained constant throughout its turbulent history - The district
was built and has always been championed by forward thinking,
talented, and dedicated people who believed in San Diego, and
poured their hearts into making the district a thriving community.
Look up! Most people when walking down the street
focus straight ahead, looking at the various business signs and
advertisements that have always been a part of any commercial
district. But, if you take a moment to broaden your perspective
a bit, and allow your eye to travel up and around the buildings
that house those businesses, you'll be in for a surprising treat!
The Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego is one of the largest and most
architecturally significant historic districts in the country,
encompassing 16 12 city blocks with over 90 buildings listed
on the National Register of Historic Buildings. It has many examples
of beautiful Victorian commercial buildings and fine examples
of many other architectural styles as well. Many are well over
100 years old, and Classical Revival, Spanish Renaissance Revival,
Modern, Oriental, Spanish, Baroque and Italian Baroque Revival
are just a few of the eclectic architectural styles to be enjoyed
in the district. The buildings have beautiful details, like stained
glass windows, corbels, moldings, carvings, casements, columns,
railings, etc. and are painted with vibrant colors. Many were
designed by renowned San Diego architects, such as and the Reid
Brothers (architects of the famous Hotel del Coronado), Irving
Gill and William Templeton Johnson.
As the sun sets, the Gaslamp Quarter streets transform into a
nighttime playground where the scene is pumping. Every night of
the week, there is something happening from special events to
dancing, wine tastings to dinner shows and karaoke to coffee houses.
Take in a movie, enjoy live theatre, music, pubs, bars or visit
a Fine Art gallery.
The Gaslamp Quarter is truly the heart of nightlife in San Diego!
